From the Cambridge Centre for Property Law

The Cambridge Centre for Property Law is a collective of property law academics from across the world, engaged in policy-relevant land law research.

Our fellows represent a wide range of academic specialisms, locations and interests, but we come together here to bring academic debates to the wider legal community.

Please get in touch with us to discuss our work or explore these issues further.

Areas of Expertise

Land Registration

Our fellows represent the leading international voices on the question of land registration. From issues surrounding conclusivity of such registers, to privacy concerns arising from registration activity, our fellows have advised numerous governmental institutions on land registration concerns.

Human rights & property law

Our research does not only focus on black letter legal issues in the land law sphere. Our fellows also consider the critical effect which human rights controls are having and should have on the fundamental structures of property law, in Europe and beyond. We examine such concerns not only in the context of housing, but also in respect of privacy, protest and property as investment.

Leaseholds

Our research covers landlord and tenant law. The expertise of the CCPL in this respect is second to none in the UK, and we work closely with practitioners working within this field. We explore leases in both a residential and commercial context, as well as the theoretical issues surrounding housing.

regulation & property law

More broadly, many of our fellows work on topics concerning regulation in land law. Much of this in the field of housing regulation and management, but we also examine the impact of the regulatory state in theoretical and constitutional terms. Such examination of the justification for state limitation of liberties in respect of property represents a central concern across our national and international fellowship.

Mortgages & mortgage regulation

Our fellows are conducting ground breaking research in the field of mortgages and mortgage regulation. Through our status within the Department of Land Economy, we are also working closely with economists specialising in real estate finance. This practical focus on the reality of mortgage lending is our of our main strengths.

the environment & property law

Our fellows also sit at the intersection of land and environmental law. The realities of the anthropocene and climate change mean that issues surrounding property rights and their environmental impacts, as well as the effect of a changing world on land, will increasingly come to the fore.

If property had simply pleasures, we could stand it; but its duties make it unbearable. In the interest of the rich we must get rid of it.
